Telefónica Móviles Launches Wireless High-Speed, Broadband Services In Guatemala With Nortel EV-DO Solutions
Telefónica Móviles Launches Wireless High-Speed, Broadband Services In Guatemala With Nortel EV-DO Solutions
AUGUST 31, 2005 -- GUATEMALA CITY, Guatemala -Telefonica Móviles has launched its 3G mobile broadband services in Guatemala using CDMA2000* 1xEV-DO technology from Nortel.
The new EV-DO high-speed network allows Telefonica to expand its subscriber services to include 'anytime, anywhere' access to a variety of services such as Web browsing and downloads of large video and music files at speeds comparable to wireline broadband connections like DSL. Telefonica also plans to offer its business customers secure mobile access to their corporate data networks from any wireless device, making it possible to remain productive when away from the office.
Telefonica Móviles Guatemala selected Nortel in May 2005 as the sole supplier of its advanced wireless broadband network in Guatemala.
"Nortel's technology and services have allowed us to modernize our network to provide the most innovative services to our subscribers in Guatemala," said Juan Antonio Abellán, general manager, Central America, Telefónica Móviles. "As one of the leading mobile services operators in the Spanish-speaking world, Telefonica is always anticipating the needs of the increasingly more sophisticated end-user, and we knew we could depend on Nortel's EV-DO solution to deliver on their expectations."
Telefonica Moviles new EV-DO network allows customers to download data on their mobile devices at speeds up to 2.4 megabits per second with average speeds of 300 to 500 kilobits per second - approximately 10 times faster than currently available networks. Such speeds also enable transmission of TV to an EV-DO enabled PDA. Nortel demonstrated this capability for Telefonica customers at a launch event in Guatemala City. Wireless operators around the world are beginning to use their existing networks to offer TV and other advanced video services that can include high-definition programming, video conferencing, remote surveillance and distance learning.
"We have worked closely with Telefónica in Guatemala to deploy a reliable and robust network that meets their needs and positions them as an innovative provider of mobile services to their subscribers in Guatemala," said Alvio Barrios, vice president, sales, Caribbean and Latin America, Nortel. "Nortel's EV-DO technology is designed to give wireless subscribers what they expect - fast and easy access to information and entertainment 'anytime, anywhere' to help enhance the quality of their lives."
Nortel supplies EV-DO equipment to 12 of the 21 operators across the globe currently offering commercial EV-DO service, including Verizon Wireless in the United States, Vesper in Brazil, Smartcom in Chile, Pelephone in Israel and Telstra in Australia. Nortel also provided EV-DO equipment to Eurotel for the first commercial 450 MHz EV-DO service in Eastern Europe. With its CDMA equipment designed to support 1xEV-DO through modular upgrades to existing hardware, Nortel re-uses existing base station equipment to help operators reduce or eliminate the need for costly hardware replacements.
Nortel has worked with operators in the Caribbean and Latin America for more than 35 years, building advanced telecommunication networks. Nortel is a leading provider of advanced wireless technologies in the region, with recent 3G deployments in the Dominican Republic (Verizon Dominicana), Peru (Telefónica Móviles), Puerto Rico (Centennial), Belize (Speednet), Trinidad & Tobago (LaqTel) and Chile (Smartcom). Nortel has designed, installed and launched more than 300 wireless networks in over 70 countries.
Nortel was the first supplier with wireless networks operating in all advanced radio technologies and is the only end-to-end provider of all next generation wireless solutions.

Sky Link And Lucent Technologies Enhance CDMA450 Network In Moscow With CDMA2000 1xEV-DO Technology And Lay Foundation For IMS-based Multimedia Services
Sky Link And Lucent Technologies Enhance CDMA450 Network In Moscow With CDMA2000 1xEV-DO Technology And Lay Foundation For IMS-based Multimedia Services
MOSCOW — August 24, 2005 — Sky Link Moscow and Lucent Technologies today announced that the two companies have initiated a project to enhance Sky Link's CDMA450 network in Moscow and its surrounding areas to support higher-speed mobile data services and blended "lifestyle" applications that combine voice, video, multimedia and other data capabilities. The upgrade will incorporate Lucent's CDMA2000® 1xEV-DO (Evolution-Data Optimized) technology to support mobile data services at speeds of up to 2.4 Megabits per second (Mbps) as well as key elements of Lucent's IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) solution.
As part of the project, Lucent will provide additional Flexent® CDMA450 base stations and upgrade a second Mobile Switching Center (MSC). Lucent also will provide its Flexent® Packet Gateway (FPG) and Super-Distributed Home Location Register (S-DHLR) — part of Lucent's IMS solution. Lucent Worldwide Services will ensure a smooth network deployment by providing installation, integration, and training and support services.
"By upgrading our network and implementing new solutions, we are building a strong foundation for our continued network development and making important and practical steps towards next-generation, personalized lifestyle services that keep pace with the modern multimedia world," said Valery Guzeev, first deputy director, Sky Link Moscow.
"Our EV-DO and IMS solutions will help Sky Link preserve existing network investments and help speed time-to-market for new applications, increasing customer satisfaction and aiding in the attraction of new subscribers," said Dmitry Kamensky, general director, Lucent Technologies in Russia and CIS. "For subscribers, IMS means quick and easy access to communication services anytime and anywhere with the device of their choice and EV-DO means super-fast mobile data services."
The Lucent S-DHLR is an advanced customer information data server that enables the creation of a single subscriber profile for each customer and all of the services they use, in contrast to the traditional method of maintaining individual subscriber databases for each service. It also provides support for a wide variety of voice and data services on mobile, wireline and converged networks. Sky Link's migration from a traditional Home Location Register (HLR) to the new Lucent S-DHLR will reduce the complexity of managing subscriber data, make it easier to offer their subscribers customized service bundles and provide a consistent look and feel for subscribers' services even when roaming across multiple network types such as GSM, W-CDMA/UMTS, WiFi and wireline networks or onto another operator's network.
The Flexent® Packet Gateway solution consists of Lucent Packetstar® (PSAX) media gateways, which support packet voice transfer on transport networks and the interaction with POTS (Plain Old Telephone Service) nodes, and the Lucent Network Controller, which provides SS7 signal processing and media gateway and media resource management. The FPG solution will provide Sky Link with next-generation switching capabilities and will interoperate seamlessly with the S-DHLR and prepaid platforms. It also is compatible with multiple network types, such as GSM and W-CDMA/UMTS, and supports interaction with IP-based networks and various legacy networks such as POTS. This single platform provides Sky Link with an efficient way to migrate to an IMS-based next-generation network, as it supports other Lucent solutions such as the IMS Session Manager.

Lucent Technologies Signs New Agreement To Expand Coverage Of VIVO's 3G CDMA2000 1xEV-DO Network In Brazil
Lucent Technologies Signs New Agreement To Expand Coverage Of VIVO''s 3G CDMA2000 1xEV-DO Network In Brazil
SAO PAULO, BRAZIL — August 22, 2005 — Lucent Technologies today announced that it signed a new agreement with VIVO, the largest mobile operator in Brazil, to expand the coverage of VIVO's third-generation (3G) CDMA2000® 1xEV-DO network in the main cities in the states of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro — the largest markets in the country. Lucent's solutions will enable VIVO to offer its 1xEV-DO mobile broadband data services -- which support speeds of up to 2.4 Megabits per second, 40 times faster than a typical dial-up connection -- to more businesses and consumers.
In the coming months, Lucent will provide new Flexent® Modular Cell 4.0 base stations and Mobile Switching Centers (MSCs) and upgrade VIVO's existing Lucent-supplied base stations and MSCs to support CDMA2000 1xEV-DO technology, expanding the reach of VIVO's 1xEV-DO network. Lucent Worldwide Services (LWS) will provide network integration, installation and RF (radio frequency) optimization services.
"Lucent has been our main partner as we've introduced advanced 3G services, and through our highly reliable and expanded network, we will be able to deliver mobile broadband data services to more consumers and business customers at speeds of up to 2.4 Megabits per second, which is much faster than our competitors' mobile data offerings," said Javier Rodriguez, vice president of technology for VIVO. "It is also important to remember that the 1xEV-DO network is perfectly integrated with our CDMA2000 1X platform, providing our users with extensive VIVO CDMA coverage."
The recently launched "Vivo Play 3G" 1xEV-DO service enables consumers to download and view multimedia content and entertainment such as TV and news programs, video clips, movie trailers, songs and digital images as well as play 3-D video games. These services are already available though an exclusive CDMA2000 1xEV-DO mobile handset that VIVO introduced in July.
VIVO offers 1xEV-DO mobile broadband services to business customers such as e-mail, Internet access, remote monitoring capabilities via streaming video, and location-based services that can help locate and provide directions to destinations such as restaurants and office buildings. With virtual private network (VPN) connections, business customers can access the VIVO high-speed data network as an extension of their corporate local area network (LAN) or intranet by using a 1xEV-DO PC card plugged into their laptop PC, allowing them to work from any location as if they were in the office while enjoying the same speed, security, authentication and data protection.
In regions where 1xEV-DO network coverage is not available, subscribers can access VIVO's CDMA2000 1X network using their 1xEV-DO mobile devices.
This 1xEV-DO network expansion agreement follows a separate agreement announced in June, under which Lucent is helping VIVO increase the capacity and coverage of the operator's CDMA2000 1X network in the São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Espírito Santo and Sergipe markets.
"This new agreement reinforces the incredible partnership that we have been developing with VIVO for several years now," said Jaime Serrano, Lucent Technologies sales vice president. "We look forward to helping VIVO expand the reach of its 1xEV-DO network and identify and stimulate market demand for these services through the Lucent Market Advantage Program. Our local production capabilities in Brazil also will provide VIVO with time-to-market advantages and cost-effective and fast local service support."

Verizon Wireless And Lucent Technologies Complete Industry's First CDMA2000 1xEV-DO Revision A Calls And Plan Technology Trial
Verizon Wireless And Lucent Technologies Complete Industry's First CDMA2000 1xEV-DO Revision A Calls And Plan Technology Trial
MURRAY HILL, NJ – August 18, 2005 - Verizon Wireless and Lucent Technologies today announced the completion of the wireless industry's first, live, over-the-air calls using CDMA2000® 1xEV-DO Revision A technology. The two companies plan to conduct a more extensive technology trial in early 2006, which will include the delivery of Voice over IP (VoIP) and new, "blended lifestyle" services and simultaneous multimedia applications that combine voice, data and video capabilities such as video telephony.
CDMA2000 1xEV-DO Revision A is an enhanced version of CDMA2000 1xEV-DO that increases the efficiency, data speeds and capacity of existing EV-DO networks. CDMA2000 1xEV-DO Revision A enables users to receive data (forward link) at speeds of theoretically up to 3.1 Megabits per second (Mbps) and send data (reverse link) at speeds of theoretically up to 1.8 Mbps. These increased reverse link data speeds reduce data latency and will enable operators such as Verizon Wireless to deliver VoIP and other multimedia services on CDMA2000 networks in the future.
"We're excited about EV-DO Revision A technology and the value and innovative, new services it will bring to enterprises and consumers," said Bill Stone, executive director of network strategy, Verizon Wireless. "Today, we provide service on the largest, fastest wireless broadband network available. Rev A will allow us to maintain our leading position in mobile broadband data and demonstrates the strong investment protection that CDMA2000 technology provides."
Using Lucent's commercial CDMA2000 infrastructure, pre-commercial software and a test terminal provided by QUALCOMM, Verizon Wireless and Lucent demonstrated simultaneous video, voice and data services such as two-way video conferencing at speeds of up to 3.1 Mbps on the forward link and 1.8 Mbps on the reverse link.
"Verizon Wireless and Lucent have been working together for years to deliver the most advanced mobile services to end users and this milestone and our planned technology trial is another example of this continuing effort," said Mike Iandolo, Mobility Access Solutions vice president and general manager for Lucent Technologies. "CDMA2000 1xEV-DO Revision A is a compelling technology for service providers and end users alike. It will enable service providers to offer new revenue-generating services and make more efficient use of spectrum resources to deliver multimedia services. For end users, there will be many benefits as well, such as the creation of richer multimedia content through the simultaneous delivery of voice and high-speed data capabilities."
Lucent's CDMA2000 1xEV-DO Revision A infrastructure will be commercially available in 2006.
Lucent's Network Solutions Group is dedicated to helping wireline, mobile and converged service providers capture the market opportunities being created by the growing demand for blended lifestyle services. A global leader in the development of commercial 3G spread-spectrum solutions, Lucent's Network Solutions Group has deployed CDMA2000, CDMA450, and W-CDMA/UMTS networks with more than 35 customers on the continents of North and South America, Asia, Europe and in the Australia/New Zealand region. Lucent has deployed more than 140,000 spread-spectrum base stations for mobile operators worldwide, of which 90,000 are already supporting 3G services.

World-first With Launch Of Trans-Tasman T3G Mobile Data Roaming
World-first With Launch Of Trans-Tasman T3G Mobile Data Roaming
August 4, 2005 -- Telecom customers can now use their laptops with Mobile Broadband data cards or Harrier PDAs in Australia’s major metropolitan centres.
The service is available in Australian cities and large regional towns. Customers can use their Mobile Broadband capable devices (data cards or Harrier PDAs) to access high-speed Mobile Broadband at speeds averaging 600kbps.
With the launch, Telecom is the first telecommunications provider in the world to provide international data roaming over 3G EV-DO (Evolution Data Optimised) technology.
Outside the Australian Mobile Broadband coverage area, customers can still use their laptops or PDAs but they will connect at lower speeds.
The service follows a roaming agreement between Telecom and Telstra Australia.
“Australia is the key destination for New Zealand business travellers. This means customers visiting Australia will be able to access the same 3G Mobile Broadband data speed they currently enjoy in New Zealand,” Telecom Mobile General Manager Kevin Kenrick said.
“This is a huge boost for trans-Tasman business travellers. It’s a big step on the way towards truly seamless trans-Tasman telecommunications.”
Telecom Mobile Broadband customers in Australia will be able to send and receive email, download business information, organise appointments and access the Internet via their laptops or PDAs.
Customers can also opt to use advanced services such as Remote Office, giving them full access to the company LAN while in Australia.
The launch of trans-Tasman mobile data roaming follows the recent announcement that Telecom will be extending its 3G Mobile Broadband network to all New Zealand main towns and cities by the end of the year.
While data speeds can vary, Mobile Broadband is faster than Telecom’s existing nationwide 027 network and the UMTS based services expected to be offered by Telecom’s competitors later this year.
Telecom mobile data customers in New Zealand wanting to use the service in Australia will need an up-to-date roaming code on their device. They can check this or arrange to have it set up by contacting their Telecom account manager or dealer.

Pelephone And Kyocera Wireless Corp. Launch Kyocera Passport, Ultra-Fast PC Card For Israel''s Only High-Speed EV-DO Network
SAN DIEGO AND ISRAEL - (August 2, 2005) - Kyocera Wireless Corp., a leading global manufacturer of CDMA wireless phones and devices, and Pelephone, Israel's first CDMA third-generation (3G) wireless network technology operator, today announced the immediate availability of the Kyocera Passport, a CDMA2000® 1x Evolution Data Optimized (EV-DO) PC card for use on Israel's only high-speed EV-DO network. With Kyocera's award-winning Passport PC Card, Pelephone customers can use any device with a PCMCIA slot to access the Internet and other applications wirelessly at speeds of up to 2.4 Mbps - comparable to a DSL or cable-modem connection.
Since Kyocera Passport's recent launch in the U.S., the PC card has received numerous awards including "Editor's Choice" picks from both PC Magazine and Laptop Magazine. Additionally, independent third-party testing by Quality Partners revealed that the Kyocera Passport is an average of 35 and 30 percent faster, respectively, than competing cards from Sierra Wireless (AirCard 580) and Novatel Wireless (V620).
The easy-to-use Passport 1xEV-DO card can be installed in minutes and gives laptop users true mobility with high-speed wireless data access any time virtually anywhere within Pelephone's network coverage area. Also, the Passport card includes dual-mode support, providing a soft handoff to CDMA2000 1xRTT service when the EV-DO network is unavailable. Passport not only provides the convenience of mobility, but also offers broadband access to corporate applications, email, and Virtual Private Networks (VPNs).
"The combination of the Kyocera Passport and our superior EV-DO network gives our business customers a real advantage and true option of creating an effective mobile office," said Gil Sharon, deputy CEO and chief marketing officer for Pelephone. "Professionals will no longer be confined by office walls - Pelephone's EV-DO solution offers the assurance of superior connectivity whether they're using downtime in the train or bus to send emails or downloading images on the road for an important presentation."
"We tested our Passport card in numerous conditions to help ensure optimal connectivity in remote locations," said Jim Kelly, executive vice president and chief operating officer at Kyocera Wireless Corp. "The result is high performance at any signal strength so Pelephone's customers can always take advantage of the fastest speeds available on Israel's only EV-DO network."
Pelephone customers can create a true mobile office, with connection speeds similar to high-speed connections at the home or office with typical download speeds of 400-700 kbps and bursts up to 2.4 Mbps. Business customers enjoy a "wired LAN experience" while they are in the field, and are able to access data quickly and easily, increasing overall productivity by remaining connected to customers, partners and co-workers. The card measures 2.13 in. x 4.84 in. x 0.51 in. and weighs 2.01 ounces.
Kyocera Passport is availably immediately through Pelephone retail locations for $11 per month for 36 months and includes a 10MB data package each month.

New Zealanders Take To Small Screen Action
New Zealanders Take To Small Screen Action
August 1. 2005 --Telecom’s T3G Video Clips service has recently past the one million mark, just three months after its launch in April.
The service, which is currently free, enables customers to stream video highlights up to three minutes long, directly to their mobile phone.
Telecom estimates the one million streamed clips would equal about five and a half years’ worth of small screen viewing.
In the three months since the service’s launch, approximately half of Telecom’s customers with video capable phones have streamed video clips.
“When we launched the service we were excited about the potential of the mobile phone as a visual medium but these results have exceeded all our expectations,” Telecom Mobile General Manager Kevin Kenrick said today.
“The service is part of a significant shift in how we receive our news and entertainment and we will see more of these benefits as Telecom continues to expand its 3G network throughout New Zealand,” Mr Kenrick said.
Video Clips content includes New Zealand news, sport and weather, local and overseas music videos, cartoons, movie trailers, the latest entertainment industry news and game reviews, previews and features.
Entertainment and music clips are proving to be the most popular viewing so far, each accounting for around 30% of total clips. News clips are the next most popular with around 10%, followed by reviews of mobile phone games, clips of the Telecom mobile phone Rubbish Film Festival and weather reports – each accounting for between 7 and 8%.
Telecom’s latest T3G Video Clips service has the best and the worst of NZ Idol to be streamed free of charge to Telecom video clip capable handsets.
Fans of the popular TV Show can follow the auditions with Video Clips through to the Top 10, the Top 5 and the final two contestants.
As well as video clips of the competition, Telecom customers can also show off their true Idol loyalties with Tru-tones, Alert Tones, Caller Tunes and Wallpapers on their 027 mobiles.
Video Clips content is sourced from popular providers including TVNZ, SKY TV, Juice TV, E! Entertainment, Gamer.TV as well as film and music distributors.
Video Clips can be streamed anywhere within Telecom’s 027 coverage area using Telecom’s range of video-capable phones. Customers access and select the Video Clip they wish to view using the Media Player from the main menu of their phone.
